Skin Lesion Removal

A skin lesion refers to any abnormality or change on the skin, which can vary from benign features like moles and birthmarks to more serious conditions such as melanoma. These lesions can be either non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant), so prompt identification and diagnosis are vital.

While most skin lesions are benign and non-threatening, they are often removed for reasons like discomfort, pain, or cosmetic appearance.

What are benign skin lesions?

Common types of benign skin lesions include:

  • Epidermoid Cysts (Sebaceous Cysts)
  • Lipomas (fatty lumps)
  • Papillomas (skin tags)
  • Dermatofibromas
  • Moles

What causes skin lesions?

Knowing what triggers the development of skin lesions is key for treatment and prevention. These growths can form due to various reasons:

  • Genetic Factors: Many skin lesions, including moles and birthmarks, can be inherited or develop naturally over time.
  • Sun and Environmental Exposure: Chronic sun exposure, pollutants, or chemicals can lead to skin lesions.
  • Ageing: As the skin matures, it becomes more vulnerable to developing lesions due to reduced elasticity and slower regeneration.
  • Infections: Skin lesions can result from infections, such as warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), or fungal and bacterial infections.
  • Health Conditions: Diseases like diabetes or autoimmune disorders can increase the likelihood of lesions appearing on the skin.
  • Lifestyle Habits: Smoking and other unhealthy habits may accelerate skin changes and contribute to the formation of lesions.

Why should you consider removal of a skin lesion?

Treating skin lesions is important not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent health complications. Effective treatment can stop further skin damage and address potential underlying risks.

Addressing skin lesions can lead to a variety of benefits, both for health and appearance. Some of the main benefits include:

  • Preventing Future Damage: Removing potentially harmful skin lesions reduces the chance they will develop into something more serious.
  • Improved Appearance: Getting rid of lesions can enhance your skin’s look, leading to better self-esteem and comfort.

What are your treatment options?

Treatment for skin lesions involves several stages to ensure successful outcomes.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Before proceeding, our dermatologists use a dermatoscope to closely examine the lesion, helping to identify its nature and determine the best treatment plan.

Surgical Treatment

For Benign Lesions: The typical procedure involves excision, where the lesion is carefully removed along with a small surrounding area of healthy skin to ensure complete removal.

For Malignant Lesions:

If the lesion is cancerous, a biopsy may first be performed for diagnosis. Afterward, the lesion is excised with a larger margin of skin, and in some cases, Mohs micrographic surgery may be recommended for precision and minimal removal of healthy tissue.

Post-Surgery Care

Post-treatment care is essential for recovery. We provide clear aftercare instructions to help healing and reduce the risk of complications. Our team is available for any follow-up questions.

Recovery

Most skin incisions take about one to two weeks to heal. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to track your progress and ensure a smooth recovery.
