A facelift is a major investment for patients – both financially, but also in terms of their recovery time and emotional commitment. Therefore, it’s not surprising that a common concern is how to protect the results of their facial rejuvenation procedure.
Here are 5 ways you can help to prolong your facelift results:
#1: Follow aftercare advice
A facelift is a major surgical procedure and the healing process can be lengthy. After your facelift, Mr Stephen Morley will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions and it is important you follow them to ensure you protect your results and ensure optimal healing.
#2: Protect your skin
Sun damage has been identified as one of the biggest culprits when it comes to facial ageing – UV rays break down collagen and other proteins in the skin, causing wrinkles and folds to appear and the skin to sag. It is essential that you wear a daily high factor sun protection whatever the weather and avoid sunbathing to prevent any further sun damage.
#3: Nourish your skin
Look to boost your skin from the inside out by adopting a healthy, balanced diet and eliminating the wrong foods; for example, sugar has been linked to skin ageing, as it triggers a process called glycation where sugar molecules destroy important proteins in the skin. Staying hydrated is also important for skin health.
#4: Stop smoking
Before you undergo any cosmetic surgery procedure, Mr Morley will advise you to quit smoking in advance of surgery and for the immediate healing period. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor so it restricts the amount of oxygenated blood that can reach the damaged tissue which can result in impaired healing. However, to protect your facelift results, we’d advise you to quit smoking permanently – smoking ages the skin and can also create wrinkles around the mouth.
#5: Maintain your ideal weight
Any major weight fluctuations – either dramatic weight loss or gain – will impact on skin elasticity and result in further skin sagging.
