An abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) operation aims to remove excess skin and fat from the front of the abdomen. This surgery is most effective in people who have loose skin on their trunk, often following weight loss or childbirth, and who are now at a stable weight. This procedure is increasingly popular in patients who have achieved significant weight loss, sometimes following on from gastric band surgery. The procedure takes about two hours and is performed under general anaesthetic. Although the procedure leaves quite a long scar at the bottom of the abdomen, most patients are delighted with the results achieved. Although an abdominoplasty is very effective at removing excess and loose skin, liposuction to other areas of the tummy can give additional benefit. Full post-operative care is provided with patients often advised to wear an abdominal support for some weeks after the operation.
